MLIS is the new barrista*
It's been almost a month since I bailed on liberryland to go work for Corporate America. Looks like I blew it by quitting right at this particular moment. According to the NY Times, librarian is the new It profession
for hipsters. Dammit! If only I'd stayed in the game, I could've been so much cooler than just being a tech writer who works with slot machines. Actually, the fact that people still feel compelled to call attention to the fact that "Hey! We're Actually Cooler Than You Think," it just makes me cringe. Maybe Seinfeld was right with the "libraries are like your pathetic friend in elementary school," in terms of people wanting so badly to be seen as cool and caring about the image of the profession. Kind of like how there are all the library based cargo cult blogs that try to highlight how tech forward libraries supposedly are by trying to be like Slashdot or Tech Crunch.
In regards to the article, I suspect that in a place like Williamsburg, you will probably also find enclaves of hipster social workers, hipster health care workers, hipster accountants, hipster physical therapists etc etc. Actually, I think I'd rather read about hipster teachers or health care workers, because they probably make less than librarians and probably face greater challenges/stresses on a daily basis. Plus who makes $51,000 early in their career and if they're working in an extremely competitive job market like New York City? You get paid based on your highest level of degree and number years since you've got said degree, which means folks in their 20s-30s generally make the least amount of money in the profession.
* Credit goes to my pal Susan for the alltime classic quip of "Law school is the new barrista!" when I was informed that a former hipper than thou college classmate of mine had switched tracks from Mission District bartender to law school student.
